Roasting the Press Episode 41 for Sunday, September 29th, 2024
CTV vs the Poilievre Conservatives, The Look of “Fake Authority” in Media and Remembering Covid-19.
Tonight’s new media personalities include Freedom Forum editor Chuck Black, independent media commentator Marie Anne and Mongo Minds Productions owner Richard Gagnon.
CTV vs the Poilievre Conservatives
Our first story tonight is all about dumb editing mix-ups, omissions and perhaps intentional errors with a recent CTV story about Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and his party’s stated intention to hold a series of non-confidence votes in a attempt to bring down the ruling Liberal minority government and call an election.
Here’s the new media’s take on the story, from the September 27th, 2024 Clyde Do Something on YouTube post, “CTV BUSTED Making FAKE NEWS - Spliced Sentence of Pierre Poilievre for New Narrative.”
The legacy media take on the story is a little more nuanced if also more forgetful of the actual facts of the situation.
The September 28th, 2024 Toronto Star opinion post, “CTV wasn’t out to get Pierre Poilievre. The truth is more alarming,” noted that the error in reporting was not due to intentional bias against Poilievre, but rather a symptom of systemic issues in Canadian media.
It argues that the declining state of journalism, characterized by budget cuts and reduced staff, is creating an environment where mistakes are more likely to occur.
It finishes up by noting:
There is going to be something ugly about the coverage of the next election, because more than half the people covering it are going to be doing so with the knowledge that Poilievre may end their employment – by defunding the CBC, ending subsidiaries to newspapers or exacting revenge on Bell in ways we do not understand.
At least two CTV employees were let go the next day according to the September 26th, 2024 CBC News post, “CTV says staffers who altered Poilievre clip 'no longer' work for its news team.”
The Poilievre Conservatives initially promised to refuse Bell Media requests for interviews for the foreseeable future unless CTV issued an apology for the “malicious” nature of the original piece.
CTV issued the apology on September 26th.
The Look of “Fake Authority” in Media
Our second discussion tonight focuses on two news reports from ten years apart and how both the onscreen interviewers and the authorities being interviewed used facial expressions and body language to convey authority without needing to actually say anything substancial.
The first piece is the June 27th, 2024 Star News on YouTube post, “Leader interviews: Keir Starmer reveals ‘first steps’ he will take if elected prime minister.”
The second piece is the ten year old CBC News Video, “Rescued London boy wants school, regular food.”
Remembering Covid-19
We finish up with the September 21st, 2024 Mongo Minds on Bitchute post, “Remember When Virtually Every Supermarket On Planet Installed Plastic Barriers Floor Stickers?”
Ahh, those were the days.
“Roasting the Press,” is an open forum with new media journalists critiquing and complaining about our well funded competitors, the stories they create and the techniques they use.
