Canada’s PM Faces Backlash for Inviting India and Saudi Leaders to G7 Summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the G7 summit on June 15^th – 17^th, in Kananaskis, Alberta,

But it’s uncertain if bin Salman will attend. As outlined in the June 10th, 2025 Economic Times of India post, “Canada invites Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince MBS to G7; ceasefire talks, Ukraine war and a tense past loom over the summit,” bin Salman was invited to the 2024 G7 Summit in Italy but declined the invitation.

The June 9th, 2025 CBC News post, Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bin Salman invited to G7 summit in Alberta: sources,” notes that bin Salman’s invitation is being condemned because of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which was linked to bin Salman by US intelligence.
