The paperwork and tracking mechanisms were put in place by the Trudeau Liberals over the last few years. Will the Carney Liberals pull the trigger on this proposed revenue stream?

The undated Generation Squeeze post, “A Price on Housing Inequity,” suggests that the initial implementation of any “home equity tax” would involved new taxes on only the “most affluent” Canadian homes. But like the failed Liberal “carbon tax,” once the new home equity tax is implemented, the initial tax rate can be expected to expand over time to increase government revenue.

As of today, it doesn’t formally exist, but Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives think the Mark Carney Liberals will quietly implement a “Home Equity Tax” should they win the Federal election on Monday.

As noted in the April 22nd, 2025 Canadian Press post, “Poilievre vows not to impose a home equity tax as Liberals, NDP talk health care,” Canadians are currently exempt from paying capital gains tax on the sales of their primary residences.
