BACK-END: Independent Canadian Journalists Need a "Canadian New-Media Association"
Media isn't "apolitical" or fair when governments provide hundreds of millions to media allies through government grants and CRA tax rebates. Here's how "new media" can level the playing field.
As outlined in the March 5th, 2025 Freedom Forum BACK-END post, “Canada Needs a ‘New Media Journalism Award’," one of the best ways to grow independent new-media in Canada is to create a series of awards to highlight industry expertise overlooked by governments and legacy media.
An annual “New Media Journalism Awards" conference will allow non-government supported media to network with colleagues and competitors, compare industry "best practices," and make deals to fund their journalism.
But media overlaps with politics and politics isn’t a normal business.
In order to protect the interests of independent journalists, new-media outlets need to collaborate in an organization able to protect and promote new media interests.
